The original post that started all of this off was Small Businesses You Can Support Today and I wanted to expand on that, so here we are. Each month, I’ll be sharing an insightful interview with the founder of a small business that has taken my interest and I want more people to know about. If you have a small business or know of a really great one, get in touch with me! Today, I’m talking to Alice, founder of AlicexLizzy.
I found this little business on Twitter, and it really is small and new at only a month old! I purchased some earrings a couple of weeks ago and have loved wearing them and received lots of compliments.
INTERVIEW WITH THE FOUNDER
How did AlicexLizzy come about?
I’m a fashion student about to start my final year and accessories is a big part of my work alongside the actual garments. Something as simple as earrings can make or break an outfit so after being in fashion for just over 4 years I feel like I know a thing or two about earrings. After finishing my menswear collection at the beginning of June, I was left with nothing to do but I still had the urge to design and produce something. After a trip to Hobbycraft I spent hours playing around with different designs, colours and shapes. I initially only intended to make earrings for myself or the occasional friend or family member but after posting a picture on my Instagram I had a few people wanting to buy a pair and that’s how AlicexLizzy started!
How long was the idea in your head before it actually launched?
The idea wasn’t in my head for long at all! I work as a machinist for a small business so I know about the struggles small business owners have to deal with and how hard it is to be successful with your business. I’ve never wanted to be my own boss even when people joked about me having my own design label after finishing my fashion degree but once my Depop and Etsy starting gaining more attention I got so excited and just wanted to work harder.
What’s the hardest part of running your own business?
The hardest thing for me is being able to juggle my job while keeping up with orders, new styles and the marketing side of my business. People won’t understand how much time and effort goes into a small Etsy store. Everything you see on my social media is completely done by me. I spend hours printing out my business cards that need to be backed onto card and then cut out ready for me to punch holes into them.
What do you wish other people knew about being a small business?
One thing that many people don’t consider is that the person behind the business has probably got a full time job so don’t get frustrated if they don’t reply to you straight away or if the delivery is longer than other places.
Do you use influencer marketing? What has your experience with that been?
Influncer Marketing is something I haven’t tried yet but may do in the future. I see it being helpful often but I do understand the dark side of it.
What is one thing people might not know about the business?
One thing people might not know about my business is that it’s only a month old! I’ve put so much time and effort into it, so it’s great seeing it grow.
Are there any small businesses you’ve supported or discovered recently?
I’m in love with Violet Vintage not only because of the beautiful clothes and accessories they sell but because that everything is second hand. Fast fashion is something I am too familiar with as a fashion student. Around 350,000 tonnes of clothing was sent to landfill last year in the UK and this is something that need to be addressed. Shopping sustainable is vital for the future of our planet and shops like Violet Vintage is leading the way.
